A blackjack table prints a few lines of rules right on the felt, and each line changes what your hand is worth. If those lines read like a puzzle, this page decodes them one by one. It sits with the other table games online at a glance references, so the focus is the printed rule and its effect on your payout, not strategy charts. Read the printed lines before your first hand, because two tables that look identical can price the same hand differently.
Blackjack table basics: the hand and the goal
You and the dealer each get two cards. Cards 2 to 10 count face value, picture cards count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. You win by getting closer to 21 than the dealer without going over, and a two-card 21 is a blackjack.
| Move | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hit | Take another card |
| Stand | Keep your total |
| Double down | Double the bet and take exactly one card |
| Split | Turn a pair into two hands with a second bet |
What the blackjack payout line means
The most important printed line is what a blackjack pays. It reads 3 to 2 or 6 to 5.
| Printed line | A ₱100 blackjack pays | Profit on 10 such hands at ₱100 |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack pays 3 to 2 | ₱150 | ₱1,500 |
| Blackjack pays 6 to 5 | ₱120 | ₱1,200 |
Ten blackjacks at ₱100 earn ₱300 less at 6 to 5, and the rest of the game plays the same. That difference is why a 6 to 5 table raises the cost of every session. The how rule changes move house edge page explains how a rule change shifts the long-run cost.
Dealer stands or hits soft 17
A soft 17 is a hand of 17 that includes an ace counted as 11, such as an ace and a 6. The printed line says either “Dealer must stand on all 17s” or “Dealer hits soft 17”. Under the second rule the dealer draws more often, which raises the dealer’s chance of improving. If you can choose between the two lines, stand on all 17s is the friendlier rule.
| Printed line | Dealer on A and 6 | Dealer on 10 and 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Stands on all 17s | Stands on 17 | Stands on 17 |
| Hits soft 17 | Draws another card | Stands on 17 |
Insurance and surrender on a blackjack table
When the dealer shows an ace, the table offers insurance. It is a separate bet of up to half your stake and it pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. Surrender, where offered, lets you give up half your bet instead of playing a poor hand.
A named example: you bet ₱100, the dealer shows an ace, and you add ₱50 insurance. If the dealer has blackjack, the ₱50 insurance pays ₱100, which covers your main bet. If not, the ₱50 is lost and play continues.
Doubling, splitting and decks on the felt
Other lines worth reading before you sit: which totals you may double on, whether you may double after a split, how many times you may split, and how many decks are in play. Each rule is a small change that adds up.
- Check which totals allow a double. Some tables allow it on any two cards and others only on 9, 10 or 11.
- Check whether double after split is allowed.
- Check whether aces can be re-split.
- Note the deck count shown on the table.
- Compare the payout line and the soft 17 line.
Where blackjack’s printed rules meet side bets
Many tables add optional bets beside the main box, such as a bet on your first two cards. Those bets have their own payouts and are separate from the lines above.
| Table area | What it settles |
|---|---|
| Main box | Your hand against the dealer’s, at the printed payout |
| Side bet box | Your first two cards alone, at a separate printed payout |
The blackjack side bets list shows what each one asks of the cards. A card game that is easier to learn than blackjack, with a goal of emptying your hand, is described at the Pusoy Dos online round. Players aged 21+ only.
FAQ
Is 3 to 2 better than 6 to 5 at a blackjack table?
Yes. On a 3 to 2 table a ₱100 blackjack pays ₱150, while at 6 to 5 the same hand pays ₱120. Over many hands that gap is a sizeable cost.
What does dealer stands on all 17s mean?
The dealer stops drawing at any total of 17 or more, including a soft 17 (an ace counted as 11). When a table says the dealer hits soft 17 instead, the dealer takes another card on that total.
Should I take insurance?
Insurance is a separate bet offered when the dealer shows an ace, and it pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. It is one of the side bets, so treat it as an extra wager rather than protection.
Ano ang ibig sabihin ng soft hand?
Kamay na may alas na binibilang bilang 11 nang hindi lumalampas sa 21. Halimbawa, alas at 6 ay soft 17.
