Poker rules for Texas Hold’em fit on one page once you see the order a hand follows. Before a hand, you can browse the other card and table games online to compare how each one settles money. In poker you play against the other players at the table, not against the house, so the whole skill is deciding when to bet, call, raise or fold. This page covers the order of play, the five betting actions and the ranking of hands.
Poker rules before the first card: the button and blinds
A dealer button moves one seat clockwise after each hand. The player on the button acts last after the flop, which is the best position. The two seats after the button post forced bets called blinds, so every hand has money in the pot to fight over.
| Seat | Forced bet |
|---|---|
| Button | None |
| Small blind | Half the minimum bet |
| Big blind | The full minimum bet |
An example with a ₱10 big blind: the small blind posts ₱5, the big blind posts ₱10, and the pot starts at ₱15 before anyone has seen a card.
Poker rules for the five betting actions
On your turn you choose from the actions below. Which ones are open depends on whether someone has bet in the current round.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Check | Pass with no bet, only when nobody has bet |
| Bet | Put chips in first |
| Call | Match the current bet |
| Raise | Increase the current bet |
| Fold | Throw your cards away and leave the hand |
A round of betting ends when every remaining player has put the same amount in or has folded.
Poker rules step by step: blinds to showdown
- The blinds are posted by the two players after the button.
- Each player receives two private hole cards, one at a time.
- The first betting round, called preflop, begins with the player left of the big blind.
- Three shared cards, the flop, are turned up and a second round of betting follows.
- A fourth shared card, the turn, brings a third round.
- A fifth and final shared card, the river, brings the fourth and last round.
- If two or more players remain, they show their cards at the showdown and the best five-card hand wins.
If every other player folds at any point, the last player takes the pot without showing a card.
Poker hand rankings from best to worst
| Rank | Hand | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Royal flush | A K Q J 10 of one suit |
| 2 | Straight flush | 9 8 7 6 5 of one suit |
| 3 | Four of a kind | 8 8 8 8 and one more card |
| 4 | Full house | K K K 4 4 |
| 5 | Flush | Five cards of one suit |
| 6 | Straight | 10 9 8 7 6, mixed suits |
| 7 | Three of a kind | Q Q Q and two others |
| 8 | Two pair | J J 5 5 |
| 9 | One pair | A A and three others |
| 10 | High card | The best single card |
An ace can play high or low in a straight, so A 2 3 4 5 is the lowest straight and 10 J Q K A is the highest.
How the poker showdown settles ties
At a showdown you build the best five-card hand from your two hole cards and the five shared cards. When two players hold the same type of hand, the higher cards decide it, and when every card matches the pot is split. Suits never rank against each other in Hold’em.
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Different hand types | The higher-ranked type wins |
| Same type, different cards | The higher cards win |
| Every card matches | The pot is split |
A named example: you hold K and 9 of hearts, and the table shows A and 7 and 2 of hearts with the 4 of spades and 5 of clubs. Your five hearts make a king-high flush. An opponent holding A and 7 of spades has two pair, aces and sevens, so your flush wins the pot.
Where to read a game’s own poker rules

FAQ
How many cards do you use to make a hand in Texas Hold'em?
Five. You may use both hole cards, one of them, or neither, and combine them with the five shared cards on the table.
What happens if two players have the same hand?
The pot is split. Suits never break a tie in poker, so two flushes are compared by rank and two identical hands share the pot equally.
Do the poker rules change between games?
The hand rankings stay the same, but the betting format can differ. Open a game's info screen before you sit to see whether it is Hold'em, how many seats it has and what its limits are.
Ano ang pinakamataas na kamay sa poker?
Royal flush, na A-K-Q-J-10 ng iisang suit. Kasunod nito ang straight flush, four of a kind at full house.
